What Toothpaste Should I Use?

When you go to the store to buy toothpaste, it can be overwhelming how many options there are! How do you know which to pick?  Tartar control, gum health, whitening, the choices are endless!  Most importantly, we recommend that you use toothpaste with the ADA (American Dental Association) seal of approval.  This means that the product has been properly tested and has been proven to be safe and effective.  Some “natural” brands that do not have this seal may contain abrasive ingredients that can be harmful to your enamel!  This includes “charcoal” toothpastes.  While most ADA approved toothpastes are safe to use, the top toothpastes that we recommend are Sensodyne, Pronamel, and Peridontax.  For our patients with very sensitive teeth, Sensodyne is our #1 recommendation.  It is important to know that you need to use Sensodyne for at least 4 weeks before noticing a significant improvement in sensitivity.  The product builds up slowly in your enamel, so don’t give up if your sensitivity isn’t instantly better, give it a chance to work!  Pronamel is Dr. Jackie’s personal favorite, she loves and recommends Pronamel Gentle Whitening.  Pronamel is extra low abrasive it so won’t cause any wear to your enamel, and is proven to strengthen your teeth and prevent cavities.  For patients with bleeding gums, we recommend Peridontax, as it is specially formulated to treat gingivitis.  Sensodyne and Pronamel come in many different flavors and variations, so try different ones to see which you prefer!

Happy brushing!! =)
